You have to figure out the mystery of your missing aunt, only to find a world in which a malevolent pastiche of Dora the Explora is behind the disappearance of countless missing children. I plan on getting those achievements all over again.
It's gory, it's psychological, it's open-ended in a great way, there's a bit in the middle where you become a tree and fans thought it was weird, and it's been a game I was waiting for the promised console ports. With just four examples, we already have a sample that shows a variety of quality games, and as a horror fan, it usually takes a couple of years to build a sample size like that. In truth, the enemy that made that scream probably wasn't even spawned on the map at all, but for a good 20 seconds, I was terrified about having to try and deal with whatever it could have been. No idea which direction it could have been. I was walking around, I believe looking for water as I was writing a guide about that, and out of nowhere, this ungodly scream came into my headphones - both in the distance and completely surrounding me.
Sons Of The Forest came to early access this February, and while survival crafting games aren't my thing, I'm glad I played it for work just due to one perfect moment I had while playing. That's dread in a nutshell, preparing you to be on edge, reminding you of the cold realities of the world and that you won't be ready for them, and many times, it means not actually showing them. Remember when Dredge was one of the games that ate up all the discussion? The fishing game that's secretly an eldritch mystery, and the mystery stayed so hardcore that some players would admit they never even came across the nightmarish stuff that it just loomed over them waiting to strike and never did.
